Australia by Martin Sharp

Martin Sharp is hailed as Australia's foremost pop artist. From his iconic images of Luna Park to his "Eternity" series, cartoons and posters, he has depicted the harbour city and its people in vivid colour for more than four decades. In the lead-up to an exhibition at the Museum of Sydney featuring material from his own collection and family archive, Sharp has designed a cover for Spectrum.The image, Australia, is inspired by a famous illustration by the English black-and-white artist Philip May for The Bulletin magazinein the 1880s called A Curiosity in her Own Country. It features several of Sharp's enduring motifs: starry, starry skies, childlike innocence, aboriginality and nativity.
